Artwork The Encounter, 1802 : More about the painting
This painting commemorates the meeting of French Captain Nicholas Baudin in Le Géographe and Matthew Flinders in Investigator off the South Australian coast on 8 April 1802.
Flinders continued sailing east and eventually completed the first close circumnavigation of the Australian mainland.
Returning to England, Flinders called in to Île-de-France (Mauritius) and was imprisoned for seven years, as Britain and France were again at war. Baudin had died on the island the previous day.
